The Pizza Game

The Pizza Game is an interactive, team-based simulation designed to enhance learning and training around process improvement. It transforms learning into a more engaging experience, helping players connect the game to real-world improvement scenarios.

Created by seasoned improvement professionals, the game is adaptable for use in any industry or environment, making it a versatile tool for teaching process optimization. It’s a multiplayer online game for 5 players plus a facilitator, accessible through any web browser and compatible with most devices. The game can be integrated into existing training programs or used as a standalone activity. Players can participate in-person or remotely, with virtual communication tools like Zoom, Teams, or Skype, though a tablet or larger screen is recommended for optimal gameplay.

How the Game Works

In the Pizza Game, players collaborate to manage a pizza delivery business. Each participant is responsible for a different stage of the pizza-making process, such as:

  • Taking customer orders
  • Preparing the dough and shaping pizza bases
  • Adding the correct toppings
  • Baking the pizza
  • Cutting and boxing the pizza for delivery

A performance dashboard displays each player’s contribution to the team’s success. Games last 5 to 10 minutes, followed by a debrief where the facilitator leads a discussion on performance and potential improvements for the next round.

The facilitator can modify game variables to influence performance. Players can suggest adjustments or request changes to the settings, testing their strategies in future rounds to improve overall efficiency.

Who Should Play the Pizza Game?

Originally developed to support continuous improvement efforts in healthcare, the Pizza Game is also effective across various sectors. It’s ideal for:

  • Quality Improvement (QI) Professionals: Using the game as a dynamic tool to teach QI concepts in an interactive and enjoyable manner.

The Pizza Game offers valuable learning opportunities, helping teams reflect on and improve processes, systems, and teamwork dynamics. It’s a versatile tool that fosters both specific process improvement skills and broader team-building insights.
